Theme: New experience, change, and things falling apart.

Characters:
Ursula: old and blind, senses are better, not really in charge anymore
Fernanda: Tries to rule the house, a widow with her husband still alive
Petra Cotes: whore, takes A.S away from Fernanda
Pilar: Fat, old
JAS:Joins Banana company, Forman. spends time with CAB

CAB : can not love, bad memory, dies

ch12
(Quote #1 pg 236) "The flapping sheets that rose up with her." This could represent wings taking her to heaven where true beauty is, where she is meant to be.

(Quote #2 pg 225 ) " No one had noticed him until the first bunch of Bananas had been eaten." Shows the families ignorance and how they never notice change.

Ch.13
(Quote#1 pg245) " ..Or the dark clouds that barely permitted her to make out the shape of things." dark clouds could represent bad things ahead or her blindness kicking in, it might be a metaphor.

(Quote #2 pg246) "Sinking into the darkness." This is like Macondo is sinking slowly into the darkness each time new things appear there.

Plot summary:
Chapter 12:
People of Macondo Spend nights exploring and observing the railroad trying to figure out what the train is. New inventions are discovered and they are tested and unliked by the people. Mr. Herbert comes and no one notices him for a little. After he comes everything begins to go wrong. New cops come and they kill a boy for spilling soda. CAB says that him and his sons will kill the gringos, so they hunt his sons down and kill 16 of them. A man spies of Remedios and she shows no care for him. Remedios is lifted into the sky and does not return. The streets become crazy with life. People have sex in the streets in front of everyone. New people cover up Jose Arcadio's tomb to get rid of the smell. Herbert brings the first car in Macondo.

Chapter 13:
Jose Arcadio goes to a seminary right away and Meme is sent to a nun school. Ursula discovers that she is blind and lost count of how old she is. Lights were invented and Ursula could barely see them. Ursula is scared that if her family finds out she is blind then they will think she is useless. She begins to use her four senses and is keener than ever. She notices the Repetition in the families everyday lives and noticed that when they do things different then things go wrong and she knows were to look. When the sun changes so does the family. Ursula finally figures out what is wrong with Amaranta and is sorry for outcasting Rebeca. Pilar says that old age is more keen than the cards. When Ursula tries to see she just bumps into things and gets in the way. There are more new comers in Macondo. Fernanda bans JAS from the house but he still come back later. AS stays with Petra because Fernanda is to much for him. AS has parties all the time and becomes fat. CAB burns remedios' dolls because of the moths and Ursula says his heart is made of stone. Meme invites the nuns and schoolgirls to the house and it become chaotic. Fernanda thinks she is barbarian like her father. JAS is no longer a partial memeber of the family. CAB watches the circus just like his childhood then forgets it. He sits by the chesnut tree and dies. Santa Sofia find him with vultures flying away.

Magical Realism:
when Ursula can find things easier while being blind
she can sew, know when the milk was boiled, and knew locations of things, forgetting she was blind. The fact that she can do so much being blind seems like magcal realism.
When AS and the elephant lady eat all day could be M.R because no one can eat for an entire day.
The breeding of the animals was wilder. they were already breeding alot and if it was wilder than that is A LOT of animals.
