Active reading 18-20!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plot summary:
chapter18- Aureliano stays in Melquiades room and studies all the books and parchments. Sofia tries to fix the house but can't keep up with it so she leaves. Fernanda is helpless without her so she asks Aureliano to help her make coffee. Things in the house start moving around and she doesn't know how so she starts thinking there are elves in the house. She also spies on Aureliano because she thinks he is stealing things from her. Her arm gets shorter. Fernanda dies. Jose Arcadio comes back to Macondo and Aureliano goes out to get books. Jose Arcadio invites kids to stay in the house and some of the elder ones would help him with his appearance. They discover the Plaster st joseph gold. JA fixes the house that is soon ruined by the kids then he kicks them out. Aureliano Amador comes to the house for help but they turn him away and he gets shot. Kids come back and take the money after drowning JA while Aureliano is unaware of it all.

chapter 19- Amaranta Ursula returns with her husband tied to a string. His name is Gaston. She brought birds to repopulate in Macondo but they just fly away. Gaston starts spending time in Melquiades room with Aureliano. He wants to ship an airplane to Macondo. Aureliano has more freedom and Macondo is at peace. Aureliano meets a woman named Nigromanta. He begins to fall in love with Amaranta Ursula at the same time. Nigromanta and him are lovers and she makes him pay her just so she can give it back when he needs it. Aureliano makes new friends. AmarantaUrsula is irresistable to him and she learns from him. She does not want to leave Macondo. Aureliano divulges his secret passion for Amaranta U. She wants to leave after that . Aureliano talks to Pilar and she knows about the repitition of his family. Aureliano and Amaranta U. have sex.

chapter 20- Pilar Ternera dies in a rocking chair. Aureliano and German helps a Man who travels. all of Aureliano's friends leave Macondo and some write and others don't. Gaston returns to Brussels. AU and Aureliano keep making love while he is gone. Aureliano stops leaving the house and the two destroy it. Gaston writes that he is returning but AU tells him she is in love with Aureliano and he accepts that. The two new lovers try to make money and AU gets pregnant. Aureliano tries to find his origins and they are scared that they are brother and sister. They restrict themselves to one area. AU gives birth to a son and wants to name him Rodrigo but Aureliano names him Aureliano and wants him to fight in wars. Their son has a pigs tail. AU dies after giving birth and Aureliano has a broken heart. The son is eaten by ants. Aureliano realizes a quote from the parchments. Melquiades had written their entire lines history 100 years ahead of time. He finds out who he is and what will happen. When he finishes reading it Macondo is wiped out.

Theme: the fall, ignorance, circular time

Magical Realism: Fernanda's arm gets short and she thinks there are elves in the house. there is also a yellow glow that comes from the floor then the floor breaks.

Aureliano: Meme's son, Locked in Melquiades room, loves Amaranta Ursula, discovers Melquiades Parchments true meaning, the last in the Buendia house.

Jose Arcadio: Fernanda's son, Discovers the gold from the plaster st Joseph, drowned to death by kids

Fernanda: paranoid about elves and thieves. dies in alone in her room

Amaranta Ursula: married to Gaston but loves Aureliano, has Aureliano's child but dies shortly after giving birth

Gaston: Amaranta Ursula's husband waits for airplanes to arrive in Macondo

Nigromanta: Prostitute, Aureliano's lover.

Pilar Ternera: 140ish, knows the repetitiveness of the Buendia line. dies in her rocking chair

Quotes:
chapter 18
#1 : pg 375- "Only then did he understand how he had began to love him." Aureliano doesn't even realize he loves JA until he dies...i guess that goes under the saying, you don't know what you have until it's gone..

#2 pg 375 : "Aureliano shut up in his room was not aware of anything."
this quote shows the ignorance in the family.

chapter 19
#1 pg 381: "..two strong sons who would be named Rodrigo and Gonzalo and never Aureliano and Jose Arcadio, and a daughter Virginia and never Remedios. " She doesn't want the names of former Buendia's because they would have the same horrible fate as the rest of them.

#2 pg396: "History of his family was a machine of unavoidable repetitions."
Pilar knows the circular time of the family and how they always repeat.

chapter 20
#1 pg410: "The silver shop, Melquiades room, ........in the depths of a domestic jungle that no one would have had the courage to penetrate." This relates to the quote in the beginning when he says he found immortality ..when he says that i guess it related to his room also..

#2 pg415: "The first of the line tied to a tree and the last eaten by the ants."
Melquiades new this and wrote it down but didn't do anything to stop it..i guess it shows that this was truely their fate.
