Theme: Repeating of time; Disaster

Magical Realism: The thing that they did not know if it was an animal or a man and were it had wings that were cut off. The invisible doctors. The butterflies that followed Mauricio and The four year rains

quote 1 ch14 : "The yellow butterflies would invade their house at dusk." Mauricio wold come over at night but no one really realized.
quote 2 ch14 273: "He was creating a second version of Petra Cotes room." He loves his daughter just as much as he loves Petra.

quote 1 ch15 293: "The events that would deal Macondo it's fatal blow..." Forshadow of Macondo's end blow may symbolize winds?
quote 2 ch15 296: "last butterfly destroyed in the blades of the fan..." Represents that Mauricio is actually dead and Meme actually is accepting that

quote 1 ch16 316: "...floating throught the atmosphere in the rooms.." the atmosphere is damp so it could represent that things are sad or falling apart.
quote 2 ch16 330: "Sunk up to his neck in morass of dead branches and rotting flowers.." May symbolize dead hope or a dead dream.

quote 1 ch17 342: "there were not many left that remembered her.." Ursula and her husband founded Macondo and these people dont remember her..that could show that when Macondo dies no one will remember it.
quote 2 ch17 335: "What did you expect..time passes..that's how it goes..." This is a repeat time really is repeating.



Characters:

ursula: Tries to help with the house; becomes a plaything for the children; dies at age between 115 to 122

JAS: Locks himself up in Melquiades room; dies

AS: Stays at Petra Cotes house finds his love for his daughter; dies

Amaranta: still somewhat bitter but dies in peace

Rebeca: Dies in her room old and alone

Meme: comes home and falls in love with a man from the Banana Company, gets sent off

Mauricio: Loves meme; shot by a man; yellow butterflies follow him

Fernanda: bossy and tries to run the house; does not feel respected

Petra Cotes: concubine; seems like AS loves her more sells raffle tickets

Amaranta Ursula: Fernanda & AS baby sent off to a private school

Aureliano: Meme's son; is sent to the house ; a mark of shame for fernanda

Gerineldo Marquez: dies during the rains



Plot Summary:
ch14- Fernanda and Aureliano Segundo have a baby named Amaranta Ursula. Fernanda becomes even more controlling. Meme comes home and has some freedom. She realizes that she likes Petra Cotes better than her own mother. Meme tells Fernanda that she loves her but doesn't really mean it but she is so moved by it that she tries to take care of her. A father daughter relationship begins to grow and he rearranges her room. Petra did not like Meme because she did not want her to take AS away from her. She was not alowed at her house. Meme gets American friends and learns English and american games. Meme opens up to her father about drinking and boys and he only laughs. Amaranta dies. Fernanda catches Meme kissing a boy in the movies and she does not approve of him but Meme loves him. Butterflies follow him everywhere. Meme see's pilar not knowing that she is her great grandmother and she is told to have sex. After they are caught Meme and her fathers relationship is never the same and Mauricio is shot on the roof; framed as a chicken thief.

ch15- Meme's baby is sent to the house and no one finds out it is her baby except for meme's parents. Fernanda take Meme away from home to her old town and leaves her there. The butterflies finally disapear. Ursula again notices the repitition in time. Fernanda believes she has more authority than the bible. The Banana workers begin to complain. They say the workers don't exsist. There are orders to kill the strikers. There was a Massacre and people were piled in a train car. People of Macondo don't even remember or know about the Massacre, the army people kill members of the strike in their homes and lie to the families. The go to find JAS but they do not see him in the room. JAS becomes like his Great grandfather.

ch16-it Rains for four years. AS stays at the Buendia's until the rain clears and helps fix up the house. He discovers he is losing emotion for his past. He recognizes Aureliano is his grandson. Fernanda has Uterine problems. She thinks doors were invented to stay closed. Gerineldo Marquez's funeral occurrs during ther rains. Ursula calls him son and says she will die after the rain ends. AS goes back home to save the animals and realized he can't be with Petra and goes back to the Buendia's. Fernanda complains more and more so AS smashes everything in the house then goes to get food. AU and Aureliano play with Ursula like a toy. AS tries to find the plaster st Joseph and eventually starts neglecting the children. Rains end in June and it does not rain for another 10 years. Macondo is in ruins. people can swim. AS goes back to Petra who has mule in the house that she is planning to raffle off.

ch17- Ursula tries to fix the house and dies at about 120. AS and Petra begin the love eachother more. Rebeca dies in her room. The gypsies come back and show the magnets and the magnifying glass. Fernanda nails the windows shut. She has a check up with the invisible doctors. Her doctor hanged himself. No one really cares for her. Aureliano and JAS become close friends and hang out in Melquiades room. They begn to believe what JAB believed about everyday being Monday. They both see Melquiades. AS has an ache in his throught so he goes to see Pilar to find out what is wrong, she tells him that Fernanda is trying to get him home by making him suffer. He realizes he is just dying but he does not tell anyone. He sends Amaranta Ursula to private school. JAS dies with his eyes open. Aureliano Segundo also dies. Fernanda wont let Petra put the shoes on AS that he wanted to wear in his coffin. In the end AS and JAS coffins are mixed up and they are put into the wrong graves
